once
the sky was sprinkled with salt
an invisible magnet
threatening to pull us up into its cavernous shell
the night brought with her a familiar darkness
and the glimmer of fireflies
falling silent
like the end of a cigarette
when all the air is sucked into the lungs
and locked away by its pink tissue
once
we felt something of the world
the beating of our hearts
and the lull of cicadas
strumming the dawn like an orchestra
filling our souls of summer
that summer we placed in a box
wrapped in precious silk
and buried under the sea.
